The museum was originally the private residence and art gallery of the banker and collector Ernest Thiel (1859–1947), who acquired art made by his contemporaries among Scandinavian artists, such as Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn, Eugène Jansson, and Edvard Munch. The house was built between 1904 and 1907, and it was designed in the Art Nouveau style with white facades by architect Ferdinand Boberg (1860–1946).

Ernest Thiel Ernest Thiel was born in the Swedish town of Norrköping in 1859 and died in 1947 in the Stockholm suburb of Djursholm. His father was an engineer at a textile factory in Norrköping, a Roman Catholic from a Walloon family. His mother, Fanny Thiel (née Stiebel) was a German Jewess who had fled to Sweden when she was young.

The Thiel Gallery is recognized as one of the finest art museums in Sweden and is beautifully set in walled grounds at Blockhusudden in the royal park of Djurgården. The gallery houses a unique collection of works of art from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by leading artists of the period including Eugène Jansson, Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Edvard Munch, August Strindberg and Anders Zorn. Ernest Jacques Thiel (Norrköping 18 August 1859 – Stockholm 6 January 1947) was a Swedish financier and art collector whose former villa in the Stockholm park area Djurgården today houses the Thielska galleriet (the Thiel Gallery).
